The first edition of the World Children’s Picture Contest was in 2013 in the town of Bansko. Children from 25 countries participated. Since then, interest in the World Children’s Picture Contest has grown and this  led to its relocation in Sofia. This year – 2019 is the seventh edition, with participants from 63 countries with over 8,000 drawings.

Requirement for participation in this year’s competition was a choice between two topics: “Free” and “Let’s play outside – your favorite games when you are in nature”. Children aged 4 to 18 participated in one of 13 age groups. There is no limit on materials and drawing techniques: watercolor, graphics, tempera, pencil, graphic techniques, etc.

Each year, Little Zograf Foundation awards:

Special Prize of the Little Zograf Foundation – a statuette for foreign drawing,

Special prize of the National Endowment Fund “13 Centuries Bulgaria”- a statuette and a cash prize of BGN 100 for a Bulgarian child,

13 gold medals, 26 silver and 39 bronze medals, 70 encouragement awards and 70 support awards.

Since last year, we also have a debut section – for newly joining countries for stimulating new participants. The goal of the jury is to choose the best drawings to be included in the Winners’ Catalogue published by Little Zograf Foundation every year. The catalogue is sent to all participating countries, awarded schools and children. The jury, chaired by Prof. Anna Boyadzhieva and members: Professor Ivana Eneva and Denitsa Marinova (designer), worked for three days to select and reward the best pictures. So many exceptional drawings from all over the world, so much beauty – the level of this year’s competition was extremely high and it was extremely difficult for the jury, because unfortunately, they cannot award everyone, yet they did give more awards than the previous year! We would like to point out the very strong presence of Iran who sent over 1600 drawings. We also had a lot of entries from Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, China, India, Thailand, Egypt, South Korea , Oman, Slovenia, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Austrialia, USA, the United Kingdom and others. And for the first year, we had entries from Peru, Vietnam, Japan and Cuba.

The awarding of distinguished teachers has also become a tradition – for their active work in the upbringing of children through the arts. Heads of institutions are also awarded – for the unflagging support of children from Bulgaria and the world. On September 28, 2019, Little Zograf Foundation, in partnership with the National Endowment Fund “13 Centuries Bulgaria”,  and the Municipality of Koprivshtitsa opens a permanent exhibition of awarded drawings from the World Competitions 2013-2018.

The Foundation has a fund of 1400 awarded drawings. It is a tradition of Little Zograf Foundation to donate collections of drawings to hospitals (St. Ivan Rilski-Sofia, Oncology Hospital-Darvenitsa), schools and kindergartens (in Bansko, Samokov and others), and the 13th Century Bulgaria National Endowment Fund.
